SURGERY PREPARATION

Depending on your diagnosis, surgery preparation may look a little different. Your doctor will discuss with you the details on how to prepare. However, there are some requirements that you can follow to ensure a successful procedure for any surgery. Planning can help facilitate a smooth transition to recovery and beyond. Below are some general guidelines for your reference, but this is not a comprehensive list. Your doctor will give you specific information to follow before your procedure, as this list is for information purposes only and does not constitute medical advice.

  • Be on time for your appointment!
  • Refrain from food and beverages for a specific amount of time before your procedure.
  • Plan to have someone drive you home after surgery and monitor your condition for 24 hours.
  • Shower or bathe the night before, and do not apply deodorants, perfumes, hair products, or other products afterward.
  • Do not wear makeup, contact lenses, or nail polish on the day of your procedure.
  • Do not wear jewelry and leave all valuables at home.
  • Wear loose-fitting and comfortable clothing.
  • Talk with your doctor prior to your procedure about all medicines that you’re taking and if you need to adjust doses or stop certain medications beforehand.
  • Bring any documentation, current medical information, insurance documents, as well as your Social Security number and emergency contact list.
  • Bring an overnight bag with personal care items, such as socks, slippers, pajamas, undergarments, a toothbrush, etc.
